How John Paul Soto end up in Charlotte NC?
I consider myself a very blessed person with nothing to complain about. Born and raised in Guatemala City, I decided to move to Charlotte back in 2002 when I was 18 and made this beautiful city my home. I moved to the US with the intention of joining the US Marine Corps and getting a college degree. Since my father and brother, both had the opportunity to serve this country, I felt a strong desire to do the same. However, due to some unfortunate circumstances, I was not able to join. I was very disappointed and discouraged because I dreamed of becoming a Marine since I was a kid.
From Cook to busboy to server...
The fact that I was not able to join the Marine, was not enough to stop my desire to succeed! With very little English, little money, and living with my older sister, I decided to stay in the US and find job. I went door by door looking for a job. I looked for days.... With a lot of experience in doing nothing, I was having a hard time finding anything. Finally, after several days of looking, I was hired at an Italian restaurant as a cook. However, I kept on looking! Shortly after I got hired at the Italian restaurant, I was also hired as a busboy in a hotel in Uptown Charlotte. At this particular job, I was able to work over time, and I had the opportunity to get promoted as a server after only 3 months of employment. Remember, I was working from 6 am. to 3 pm. at the hotel and from 4 pm. to midnight at the restaurant. I am not complaining and at the age of 18, I felt like I was making a lot of money! The jobs gave me the opportunity to purchase my first car! For a while, I was riding a used bicycle that I bought at a pawnshop when I first started to work. I finally decided to quit working at the Italian restaurant and continued to work only at the hotel.
From Server to a Firefighter...It was at the hotel that I was blessed by meeting a Charlotte Firefighter... One morning he approached me and asked me if I had ever thought about joining the Fire Department? Honestly, I had never thought of it!!After talking to him about the job, I decided to apply to the Charlotte Fire Department. The day of the test there were over 1500 people competing for about 60 positions! I thought to myself, this must be something good!?... I took the test and passed!!! I went through a long process and finally, got hired!!! I got hired as a firefighter exactly one year after I moved to Charlotte, January 28, 2003. I was one of 4 Latinos Firefighters in Charlotte at that time, among almost a 1,000 firefighters in the city. I kept my job as a waiter at the hotel part time for a little over a year after I started working at the Fire Department. Finally, I was able to attend school and did not have to pay for it! I finished my 2 year degree in Fire Technology in December of 2008, and I am planning to go for my 4 years degree in Financial Planning.
Firefighter and a Realtor... I have a great desire to be successful, to be the best in whatever I do, and to never stop improving my skills and my knowledge. Even though I found a career that I love as a Firefighter, I still had the desired to do something else. The flexible schedule offered by the Fire Department, is just what I need in order to pursue something else.After researching and thinking over and over on what to do, I finally decided to get into Real Estate. I have to admit, I thought it was going to be an easy job... and I was WRONG! However, it is in Real Estate that I have found my passion! Real Estate has giving me the opportunity to challenge myself, to learn new ways of been a better person, and to know that everything that you work hard for is so much more rewarding. It has given me the opportunity to meet great, smart people, and in the process help others with the biggest transaction of their life. I found that Real Estate is one of the most rewarding and one of the most stressful jobs. I absolutely love what I do and I am making a career out of Real Estate as well!

As I told you before, I am a very blessed guy. In 2007 I met the most incredible, intelligent, and beautiful woman in the world, Sonia! I recently had the honor of marring her. Together we have three babies (dogs) Charlie, Louie and Lucy. We enjoy dancing, camping, hiking, having fun with friends, and spending time together. Regardless of how busy I am, God and my family come first!
